Sausage and Gnocchi with Vodka Tomato Sauce

A rich tomato sauce smothers flavourful sausage and gnocchi.

Ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 yellow onion, sliced 
  • 4 cloves garlic, sliced 
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt 
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper 
  • 2 tablespoons vodka 
  • 1 can crushed tomatoes 
  • 125 g cream cheese, cubed
  • 4 milk or hot Italian sausages, casings removed 
  • 250 g store-bought dried gnocchi 

Instructions:

  1. Add oil to a large skillet (with a lid) over medium high heat.
  2. Add the onions and garlic. Season with salt and pepper. Stir and sauté for a couple of minutes. 
  3. Slowly add the vodka. Wait for 30 seconds before adding the crushed tomatoes. With the can now emptied, fill a 1/3 of it with water and swirl the can around to grab the remains tomatoes on the wall of the can. Dump it into the skillet. Stir.
  4. Place the cubed cream cheese on top, followed by the sausages. Do not stir.
  5. Cover with a lid, reduce heat to low and simmer for 2-2 1/2 hours.
  6. Add the gnocchi, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce, and cook according to the package directions.
